PERSONAL.

Marshal Foch has left Paris for New York (says a cable message).

■Mr. J. Edie, M.P. for Bruce, is on a visit to New Plymouth.

Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., returns to Wellington by to-day’s express, and to-morrow will preside at the opening of the Dominion Federated School Committees’ Conference at Wellington.

The death occurred at Hawera on Thursday of Mrs. Hickey, mother of Mrs. E. Long, of Manaia, Mrs. M. J. Power, of Hawera, and Mrs. T. Riordan, of Christchurch. She was 82 years of age.

The death occurred on Friday of one of Wellington’s early settlers, Mr. M. Segrief. Deceased, who reached the age of 88, was born in Skerriex, Co. Dublin, Ireland. In 1861 he came out to the Victorian goldfields, which he left shortly afterwards for the Otago diggings, whence he came to Wellington in 1864, residing there ever since. During his long residence in Wellington Mr. Segrief was engaged in business, at first with the Panama Steamship Compay, and later with Captain William’s Company, then with the Union Steam Ship Company, and until recently with the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company. The celebration of his 9Gth birthday by Mr. Henry Putt, of Vogeltown, yesterday was marked by a gathering of a number of friends, and he was the recipient of many congratulations. Even at this advanced age Mr. Putt still leads an active life, and devotes a good deal of time to gardening. He is a native of South Devon, and came to New Plymouth in the pioneer ship William Biyan, landing at Moturoa on March 31, 1341. Mr. Putt’s first experiences in New Zealand was as a hoy on survey parties. Later he followed farming pursuits, and has since retired to live in Vogeltown. He is a Waireka veteran and experienced all the troublous times of the Maori war.
