CRICKET.
PROSPECTS FOR THE SEASON. A CENTRAL COMPETITION. The wet weather of the past week lias interfered with cricket practice, but, providing the weather holds up, the various clubs will practice this afternoon. The Inglewood Club Is hopeful of entering two senior elevens, one in the North Taranaki Saturday competition, and the other In the Central Division Thursday competition.
A meeting was held on Thursday at Stratford to discuss the proposal to have a Thursday central competition, and as the outcome it is expected that this season will see a competition in Central Taranaki, in which Eltham, Stratford and Inglewood, the Thursday half-holiday towns, will take part; also teams for Midliirst and Toko. A club has been formed in Waitara, and it is said that the riverside town will enter strong senior and junior teams in the North Taranaki Saturday competition. Another club has been formed in New Plymouth. On Thursday a meeting of the watersiders was held at the wharf, Mr. W. H. Fitzpatrick presiding over a good attendance. It was decided to form a club, and a committee was appointed comprising Messrs. Gallagher, L. Fitzpatrick, Broughton, Bailey, Tuku and Peter, with Mr. A. Oliver as secretory. The subscription was fixed at ss, and there is already a membership of about 40. : A senior team will be entered in the competition. The question of ground was left to the committee, but it is probable that an endeavor will be made to obtain the use of the Government reserve. This and other important matters will be decided at a future meeting.
A practice match, will be held on the racecause ground on Monday afternoon, commencing at 2 p.m. All enthusiasts desirous of playing are asked to be present. SOUTH TARANAKI ASSOCIATION. The annual meeting of the South Taranaki. Cricket Association was held on Wednesday evening at Hawera. Those present were : Messrs. B. McCarthy (chair). Penny (Okaiawa), Silson and Tiddy (Hawera), Bain and Stewart (Eltham), Hughes (Manaia), Betts and Priest (Kaponga). Correspondence was read. Including a letter frocn Mr. G. A. Lyall, secretary of the Schools’ Cricket Association, expressing appreciation of the work of the association in inaugurating the cricket competition among the' schools that season. The letter was highly pleasing to the association, and a motion was i passed that the letter be filed as a record. The Schools’ Shield, purchased with funds' raised by the various clubs, was won last year by Auroa School, and tfiie matter of hav- j ing the shield presented, if possible, at the I Governor-General’s visit next week, was left I in the hands of Mr. McCarthy to arrange. | The association’s shield was then presented ! t<. the Eltham representatives, Messrs. Bain and Stewart, who suitably responded. The annual report showed that a successful season had been spent, the championship having been well contested, while in outoide matches South Taranaki cricket had fairlyheld its own. Two matches were played against North Taranaki, honors being even.
v.hile in combination Taranaki played a Wellington team, losing heavily, but secured a meritorious win against Wanganui. In the two Town v. Country matches honors were again divided. Batting and howling averages were won by Dr. Maunsell and Mr. McCarthy respectively. • The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The question of levies came up for discussion, and it was decided that the levy for each club be one guinea for the first team and half a guinea far each team in excess of one entered in the competitions. These and other matters are to be discussed at a further meeting on Tuesday, October The opening day was fixed for Saturday, October 29.—Star. A THURSDAY COMPETITION. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A meeting of delegates of the Stratford. Midhirst, and Eltham Cricket Clubs was held ir Stratford on Thursday afternoon. An apology was received from the Inglewood Club, which was unrepresented owing to a misunderstanding as to dates. It was decided to institute a Thursday competition, to affiliate with the South Taranaki Cricket Association, and to suggest that the winner of the Thursday competition play off with the winner of the Saturday competition for the cup. Tiie following list cf fixtuires was drawn up for the first round:— November 3.—Eltham v. at Eltham; Inglewood v. Midhirst, at Inglewood. November 10. —Midhirst v. Eltham, at MidFirst; Stratford v. Inglewood, at Stratford. November 17.—Eltham y. Inglewood, at Eltham ; Mldhlrst -v. Stratford, at. Stratford.
