PERILS OF EVEREST.
EXPLORERS MEET DIFFICULTY. POINT WHERE IT FREEZES. By Telegraph-—Press Assn—Copyright, Received Oct. 21, 7.20 p.m. London, Oct. 20. Reports that the Everest expedition, after passing a height of 20,000 feet, found tracks of hare and fox in the snow and marks like a human foot are most puzzling. The coolies declared it was the track of a wild hairy man, who was occasionally found in the wildest inaccessible spots. Camping at 22,500 feet, the thermometer descended to minus 1 fahrenheit, everything being frozen solid. With a whirlwind and suffocating snow, in such a bitter wind and at such a great altitude, it seemed impossible to survive many hours, and though the slope reached appeared passable to the summit of Everest, the climbers were reluctantly compelled to return and give up the attempt for the present and return to the camp at Khata. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. London, Oct. 20. The Everest party has completed the season’s reconnaissance of the mountain, reaching a col at 23,000 feet due north of the mountain. The highest camp was at *22,400 feet. Terrific gales prevented further progress.
