WORKERS’ DWELLINGS.

ERECTION IN NEW PLYMOUTH SIX MORE COMPLETED. Six workers’ dwellings which have been in course of construction at Fitzroy Road, New Plymouth, are now completed, making a total of eleven in various parts of the town. Three others are in course of erection, and the 'building of fourteen more later is content) plated by the Labor Department. The houses on the Fitzroy Road are all tenanted by families. with one exception where the work will not ba actually finished till next week, when the successful applicant will go into occupation. The houses are built of concrete, finished in rough cast and bear a neat appearance. The front designs vary, having been constructed on different plans, but all the dwellings are of five rooms and bathroom, and are conveniently fitted up. A washhouse and a woodshed is attached. Electric light and a hot water service will also make for the comfort of the tenants. The front room of the house is 14 by 12ft.. an,d the living room is of the same dimensions. Two bedrooms are 13ft. by IQft. and 9ft. by 9ft. respectively. Ceilings are of beaver board with white battens and the walls are plastered, and distenv pered in proof colors. One housewife who recently removed in one of these homes expresses complete satisfaction with the convenience of the building. The sites are tach a little over oneeighth of an acre, and'at the back, adjoining each section, is half tin acre of land, which is to ; be devoted to a common playground for the children. Though the houses were only recently occupied, some of the tenants have set to work early with gardening operations and improvements to the ground. As there were quite a number applicants the houses were allotted to families who, in the opinion of the department, were most in need of accommodation. As the cost of the buildings has not yet been assessed, the work having been done by day labor, the actnal amount of the rent has not been decided, but this should be between 26s and 30s per week, including interest, insurance, and repayment of principal over a period of thirty years. Interest is calculated at five per cent., but it tenants are not in arrears at the halt yearly period a reduction of one-halt per cent, is allowed. Of the other houses to be erected later, seven will lie situated adjacent to those just completed, and will have a frontage to Clemow Road, and seven will be on land in VealeS estate secured by the department.
