NEW POST OFFICE
FACILITIES FOR FITZROY. AN UP-TO-DATE BUILDING. Residents in the eastern end of New Flymouth are now catered for in the matter of postal facilities by the new office which has recently been opened at Fitzroy. The building, which is situated at the corner of Devon Street and Paynter’s Lane, is of wood on concrete foundations. It consists of office accommodation, which occupies the full width of the premises on the Devon Street frontage, and dwelling apartments at the rear of the offices. It is fitted up with all the necessary conveniences and equipment of a suburban office, and should meet the needs of the district for some time to come. A lobby inside the main entrance doors gives access to the private letter boxes, of which there are 28, and from this entrance is gained to the main office through a glass panel door. Along the wall opposite the door are the desks for filling in the various forms used in postal and telegraphic business, and at the western end is the public counter. The telephone bureau is to the left of the door leading into the. main office. The new arrangements at Fitzroy will not affect the delivery of mails. Correspondence, etc., will be despatched from th chief post office by letter carriers as usual. Letters addressed to the post office, or to residents who live beyond the radius covered by the letter carriers, can be obtained at the counter during office hours—from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.—as usual. No change has been made either iii r>- ’rd to the receiving of mail matter, so k.i as the receiving, boxes are concerned, and the new office provides an extra receiving station for mail matter. All these boxes are still cleared at the times- stated, and all matter posted at the new office up to closing time in the afternoon is forwarded to the chief post office that evening. A clearance of the box is also made in the early morning in time to catch the mail by the express for the south. One of the principal advantages from the new office will be in the matter of the dispatch of telegraphic business. Inward and outward telegrams at Fitzroy are dealt with by telephone with the New Plymouth office, but a messenger is now stationed permanently at the Fitzroy office, and all telegrams which can be most expeditiously delivered that way will be sent through the new office, from which free delivery is made within a radius of .one mile; Mrs. Riddell, who has been transferred from the Auckland district, is the first postmistress at the new office.
