OBITUARY.

MR. SAMUEL HILL. The death occurred at Auckland yesterday morning of Mr. Samuel Hill, aged 67 years. The late Mr. Hill was the second son of Sergeant Jas Hill, of the 57th Regiment. He was born at the Island of Corfu, where the “Diehards” were stationed at that time. On their transfer to India he accompanied his parents and remained there until the regiment was ordered to New Zealand in 1860.

At the conclusion of the Maori troubles Sergeant and Mrs. Hill and family decided to stay in Taranaki, and for some time resided in New Plymouth. Later, Sergeant Hil 1 took up a section on the Egmont Road in what is known as' the Hillsborough district, and here the family resided for many years. As the family grew up, Mr. Hill, Senr., divided his property among the boys, and they carried on dairying on their own account. The late Mr. Sam Hill always took a keen interest in public affairs, and at one time was a member of the (Education Board and also of the Taranaki Licensing Bench. When he sold his farm he came to reside in New Plymouth and accepted the position of district valuer. Some years ago he was transferred to Wellington, and later to Auckland, and during the last few years has been living in retirement in Auckland. He had not enjoyed the best of health for some time past. He is survived by Mrs. Hill and a. family of two daughters (Mrs. Boucher, of Auckland, and Mps. Sandford, of Feilding), and two sons (Mr. Leslie Hill, of Auckland, and Mr. A. Hill, of Waverley). The eldest son William was killed during the war. Mr. BjU also leaves three sisters' (Mrs. T. Taylor, Waitara, Mrs. F. Cramer, Stratford, and. Mrs. Fred Hoskin, Matapu), and two brothers (Mr. J. R. Hill, New Plymouth, and Mr. N. W. Hill, Hillsborough).
