LIFE-SAVING SOCIETY. A meeting of the committee of the North Taranaki Head Centre of the Royal LifeSaving Society of New Zealand was held last night, Mr. A. R. Standish presiding over a fair attendance. Discussing a suggestion that an alarm bell should be installed at the baths for the purpose of summoning the custodian in case of accident, the opinion was expressed that if such an alarm were installed it would probably be abused. No action waS taken. Mr. L. B. Webster suggested that notices should be erected at the baths warning bathers against raising false alarms, as these led to confusion, and would be a real danger in effecting a genuine alarm.
Several members pointed out the necessity of keeping a life-saving reel on the Ngamotu beach, stating that the society would be lacking in its duty if it did not do something in the matter. Others considered the Borough Council should be approached for assistance, or that swimmers in the vicinity of the beach should be requested to form a club, in which case a reel could be placed in their charge. It was decided to approach Ngamotu swimmers and put to them the matter of forming a club. It was decided that the Borough Council should be requested to include in their posters advertising the baths a notification to the effect that members of the society were prepared to give life-saving and resuscitation tuition free. The date of the annual meeting of the society was fixed for Wednesday next.
