AUCKLAND BY-ELECTION.
FARMERS INTERESTED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. The provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union appointed a committee to wait on Mr. G. W. Russell and Mr. Clutha Mackenzie (by-election candidates) to obtain an expression of their views on matters recently placed before the Premier by a farmers’ deputation, and, failing satisfactory replies, the committee was authorised to select a candidate for Auckland East. The deputation waited on the candidates to-day, emphasising the need for economy, and suggesting that the Arbitration Court be suspended, or, in the alternative, that preference to unionists be abolished. Mr. Mackenzie said he would give attentention, if returned, to seeing thatuithe retrenchment promised by the Premier was carried out, but he did not think the system could be summarily suspended, as contracts existed. Mr. Russell agreed that retrenchment was desirable. Regarding arbitration his teply was: “You’ve come to the wrong shop.”
