THE EMPIRE NAVY.
NEW CAPITAL SHIPS. TO COST SIX MILLIONS. HELP FROM DOMINIONS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Oct. 19, 9.25 p.m. London, Oct. 19. The Admiralty, in a non-committal reference to Mr. W. F. Massey’s cabled statement that all parts of the Empire had agreed to contribute towards the cost and maintenance of four new capital ships, states whether the Dominions contribute a share was a matter within the discretion of the Dominion Parliaments. The Admiralty pointed out that the ’Dominions’ assistance in the naval defence of the Empire would be equally effective whether it assumed the form of monetary contributions for capital ships, building destroyers for themselves or providing bases. They had no information with reference to Mr. Massey’s announcement in regard to floating a loan of £500,000 for an undisclosed special purpose, and were unable to confirm or deny a report that it would constitute New Zealand’s naval contribution. The original estimate that the cost of the four ships would be £8,000,000 had been revised and the present estimate was £6,000.000, in consequence of a decline in the cost of labor and materials. —Aus.-NjZ.
