HIGHWAYS BILL.
CANTERBURY OBJECTIONS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, October 19. The Canterbury Progress League conferred with representatives of local bodies and public organisations regarding the Highways Bill. A motion was carried that, while appreciating the efforts of the Minister to promote legislation for tfie bettering of the main highways, and while endorsing the proposal for an ad valorem tax on tyres, the conference enter* an emphatic protest against (1) the centralisation of control and the elimination of local governing bodies; (2) the limitation of the scheme in the first instance to the highways specially indicated by the Minister; (3) the imposition of’a dual tax or flat tax; (4) the expenditure of tax revenue on capital cost: and (5) the eliminating of main borough roads.
