ALLEGED THEFTS OF BEER. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Carterton, Oct. 18. In connection with the arrest of two young natives, Wiremu Namana and Wiremu Naera, on a charge of breaking and entering the storeroom at the Gladstone Hotel and removing a quantity of beer, four further arrests have been made. It appears that a fortnight previous to the alleged act of the arrested natives a similar offence was committed. Constables Millar and Colbournes on Sunday arrested at Gladstone, Rangi Namana, Reweti Hemi, and Pera Peanapa. A fourth native was implicated and on a visit to Papawai Constable Gregor, of Greytown, apprehended him. The four appeared at the Carterton Police Court yesterday and were remanded till Tuesday next. No bail was asked for. Two young natives appeared before the Court this morning and were further remanded till next Tuesday on the same bails of £5O and £5O. The last four arrested also appeared and were remanded to the same date. Bail was applied for and allowed each in £250 and security £25. STOKERS’ DISPUTE. - Wellington, Oct. 18. A dispute has occurred regarding the stokehole complement of the Mararoa, and the men refused to sign on the new articles to-day. The matter has been referred to the head office of the Union Company, and it is not known yet whether the vessel will sail for Lyttelton as usual.
