The North-east Coast steel manufacturers have made a cut of 70s for steel plates. The manufacturers declare that they are not merely sacrificing their profits, but are incurring big losses to encourage trade. Y’esterday the wholesale prices of the best chilled beef slumped below the pre-war standard, but recovered somewhat later. The fall io regarded as an indication of the general trend of prices. THE WOOL MARKET. DEMAND FOR MERINOS. Received Oct. 18, 5.5 p.m. London, Oct. IT. At the B A.W.R.A. wool sale the market was firm at full rate prices. There was very keen competition, for crossbreds, merinos, and especially topmaking sorts. In order to meet the demand for more merinos B.A.W.R.A. offered to hold an additional sale of 11,000 bales on the 29th, but the buyers decided against an extra day’s sale.
