BAPTIST CONFERENCE.
PROTEST AT GAMBLING. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wanganui, Oct. 14. At the Baptist Conference to-day, the selection of officers resulted: President. Rev. W. H. Hinton; vice-president, Mr. J A. Parmett (Christchurch); conference sermon preacher, Rev. A. S. Wilson; deputy, Rev. Herons; editor of The Baptist, Rev. J. J. North; auditor. Mr. Charles Collins; solicitor, Mr. O. Mazengarb. On the motion of the Rev. J. J. North the following motion was carried: “The conference calls attention to the ominous spread ot gambling, and affirms that the licensing by the Government of the totalisator is responsible for the alarming growth of gambling hi all classes of society; the conference believes the time has arrived for a na-tion-wide movement against gambling; that clear teaching ought everywhere to be given on social economies and the moral perils of the gambling habit: and that the circumstances of the day demanded that the Government license for petty gambling in aid of philanthropic or religious purposes should be at once ’withdrawn.”
