RACING IN AUSTRALIA. CAULFIELD CUP MEETING. VIOLINCELLO WINS CUP. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Oct. 16, 5.5 p.m. Melbourne, Oct. 16. The weather was fine but dull for the . third day of the V.A.T.C. meeting. The attendance was estimated at 60,000, and the GovernorGeneral and State Governor were present. The going was dead after heavy rains. Mr. E. J. Watt's Lady Aura led in the early stages of the Gwyn Nursery Handicap. Pascoe was lying fifth at the turn, and scored'narrowly. The winner is owned by Mr. B. Bennett, who won the race with Antarian in 1920. Pascoe is engaged in the Maribyroong Stakes. Violincello was always third or fourth on the rails in the Caulfield Cup, and won brilliantly. Purser came with a fine run on the outside. Lionel Attwill led for a long way, and finished a good third. Violincello cost £4OOO in England last year. This is his first win in Australia.’ He was ridden by W. Foulsham. Violincello Incurs a 101 b penalty iu the Melbourne Cup. The victory was popular. Following are the results of the principal events:

Twenty started. Sister Olive was first off the mark, followed by Gringalet, Violincello and Lionel Attwill. Kingbier led past the stand from Lionel Attwill, Violincello, Tangalooma and Purser. Lionel Attwill was in command going out of the straight, with Kingbier, Tangalooma and Viollucello as his nearest attendants. Lionel Attwill led at the six furlongs from Kingbier, Vlolincello, Crusader, Sonny Foy and Tangalooma. At the five furlongs post IJonel Attwill was ahead of Kingbier, with Tangalooma third and Vlolincello fourth.’ Lionel Attwill wss first Into the straight, Vloiincello next. Purser third and Tangalooma fourth. Vlolincello passed the leader at tiie distance and won by half a length, the same distance between second and third. Sister Olive was a close fourth, and then came Ethiopian, Slnbad the Sailor, Gringalet, Tangalooma, Prince Sandy, Daarewin, Dunwil, with Arch Maretla last. Time, 2min 35%scc. Dunedin Oct. 15 The second day of the Dunedin Jotkev Club’s < spring meeting was held to-day in showery weather, but nevertheless the attendance was good and the racing fairly interesting. MASTERTON MEETING. FINAL DAY’S RESULTS. Masterton, Oct. 15. The Masterton spring meeting was concluded on Saturday. Tire heavy rain which fell at intervals throughout the day had an adverse effect on the attendance. A heavy shewer also delayed the start before the last race.
