BOWLING.

OPENING OF THE SEASON. THE TOWN CLUES. Bowling clubs in New Plymouth officially commenced the season on Saturday, and wer© favored with good weather conditions. The decision that all clubs should hold the opening on the same da.te is a new departure, operating for the first time this year. Formerly clubs opened greens on different dates, but as this occupied at least four playing days at the commencement of the season it was decided to adopt one opening day for ali clubs, members foregathering on their own greens, THE FITZROY GREEN. There was a large gathering of bowlers and ladies at the Fitzroy green to attend tne opening ceremony. Mr. A. S. Brooker (President), on behalf of the club, extended a hearty welcome to all at the beginning of another bowling season, especially to those visitors from other clubs. He said the opening of all the greens simultaneously prevented a large number of players from neighbouring clubs from being present, but he was pleased to have received telegrams of congratulation and good wishes from the Waitara and West End dubs. He regretted to have to refer to tire death of the late Mr. O. Oxenha<m, who had always been a keen member of the club and a good sport. Mr. Oxenham’s presence on both the bowling and croquet lawns would be sadly missed. Mr. Brooker moved that a resolution of sympathy with the relatives of their late fellow bowler and friend, and an appreciation of his services and friendship be placed on record, and the motion was carried, all present standing in silence.

Mr. Brooker congratulated the club on its success last season. It had annexed tho Taranaki Association banner and the Taranaki championship shield. He then presented Mr. Percy Jury with the championship singles, cup and a medal presented by Mr. J. Bennett. The junior championship singles medal, presented by Mr. A. S. Brooker, was handed to Mr. J. S. Short. The recipients were heartily applauded.

Thanks for the welcome extended to them were returned by Mr. F. J. Hill (New Plymouth Club), Mr. N. C. Vale (Thames Club), and Mr. H. C. Glendinning (West End Club). Mr. Brooker, in declaring the green open for the season’s play, asked Mrs. Brooker to throw tie first "jack,” and the usual president and vice-president match was proceeoed with. During the afternoon Mr. Brooker formally declared the croquet lawns open for play, calling on Mrs. P. Jury to make the initial

The thanks of the club were due to those in charge of this work, and to all who had helped the club, especially the ladies.
