TURF TOPICS. (By <f Moturoa.") The Masteijton, Dunedin and Whangarei spring meetings will be concluded to-day. Tangaiooma is likely to start, a warm order la to-day’s Caulfield Cup. Others fancied are Violoncello, Tavistock, Prince Sandy and Syce Knight. The unfortunately named Kill’em, by Kil-broney—-Cyre, recently broke his fetlock joints and had to be destroyed. Nowadays we seldom hear of horses being "got at," but Eleus and a stablemate were alleged to have& been given some poisonous drug recently, and as a result both horses were ill for several days. It is alleged that Starland has been steadily backed to win the New Zealand Cup, and now’ that the Nassau gelding has been nominated freely for the other principal handicaps at the Canterbury metropolitan meeting, i» looks as if Mr. G. L. Stead is hopeful of adding the big Cup to the list of scalps (including the Auckland and Takapuna Cups) credited to Starland, Following is the list of horses in the Dunedin Guineas (one mile), to be run at Dunedin to-day: Pluto, Valdamo, Winning Hit, Purple Spur, Janus, Meteorite, Te Kuri, Songbird and Bluff 8.10, Matata, Palestrina and Kilcullen 8.5. On paper life race appears to lie between Winning Hit, Pluto, and Palestrina. Down the line there is "nothing doing" about the Crucelle—Amber Tips double at Waverley. Possibly the layers would be equally scared if one mentioned Volo and Income in the same breath to them.

Waverley acceptances are first-class. Seventeen remain in the Clip race, and of these Volo, Tame Fox, Cruceile and Detroit are al! worthy of consideration. A wet trackmight serve’ the lighter weighted division, and in this case Crucelle and Detroit would have to be reckoned with. An acceptance of ten in. the Brewer Handicap is satisfactory, and Inah, Income and Amber Tips are sure to be supported by ante-post punters. The minor events have all filled to overflowing, but as several are engaged in more than one race, fields may be reduced to comfortable proportions on the day. Mort Avis, Velcciform and Passenger read well in the Moumakaki Handicap, and Malingerer and Dema des in the Wilson Welter. If Velociform and Mixture go to the post for the Flying they may be best backed, and Mockery, Detnades and Sunny Jim look as well as any of the big team in the Jackson Stakes. Seventeen hold their ground in the Hurdles, including Simon, who 7s in a class of his own; but War Loan, Gold Problem or one or two other light weights may make him feel his 12st. all the way. A notable absentee from the Waverley Cup is Railand, who was alleged to have been "set” for the race. Prodigal is engaged in the Hurdles at Waverley, and as he jumps well he may turn out a playable proposition over fences. Velociform has been paid up for in three races at Waverley. Some owners hava money i to burn 1 | Taranaki stables are strongly represented, but horses from practically every North Isi land centre have been accepted for, and the gathering promises splendid sport. "Freddie” Jones had a big team at Dunedin, and was successful with The Reaver and Prosperity on Thursday. The Reaver, who Is a four-year-old son of Campfire, from Gow rie Lass, cost his connections a lot of money at the Wanganui meeting, though he ran well, and his followers were sure to be in—"boots and ail”—at Dunedin. To-day they will be oi. Amythas, which will—if he wins—return only "beer money."
