NO SUNDAY PLAY.
TENNIS CLUB’S DECISION. A motion “That the committae be recommended to allow play on the courts on Sunday,” was brought forward at the annual meeting of t)ie‘ New Plymouth Tennis and Croquet dub last night, and led to a short discussion. The chairman (Dr. Leatham) did not favor the proposal, as he said, the courts were in such a position where players were likely to come in contact with people who feel that it was not right to play on Sundays. “The courts need a day’s rest,” said another member in opposing the motion. Mr. E. Griffiths said the matter had been discussed by many clubs, and the general opinion was that it was not advisable to play on Sundays. Personally, he was not against play on private courts, especially if they were not in the public view, but in the case of the club’s grounds he thought members should rather consider the feelings of those opposed to Sunday play. The mover (Mr. C. Stephenson) quoted history to support his proposal. He said Sunday “used to be ft great day for sport till Oliver Cromwell's time.” In regard to giving the courts a rest he thought this could easily be done on a week day, such as Wednesday. On being put to the meeting the motion was lost.
