WAIMATE WEST COUNTY COUNCIL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Oct. 12. At the monthly meeting of the Waimate West County Council, held at Mai-aia today, there were present: Crs. T. W. McPhillips (chairman), J. S. McKay, W. C. Fleming, E. Long, J. Ste'.enson and T. A. Bridge.
The State Advances Department forwarded forms of application for subsidy on the Kapuni bridge. The chairman reported that he had interviewed the Minister, who said that instructions were given that the work was not to be gone on with unless authorised by the department. These instructions, however, were not received until the bridge was practically built. The Minister replied that he would see what he could do, and so the council was making application for £5OO.
Cr. Stevenson drew attention to the scour which had taken place on the Lower Palmer Road, and mentioned that, the only person living in that vicinity was a ratepayer in the Hawera County. Cr. Bridge explained that the road was a boundary road between the Waimate and Hawera Counties.
The chairman and Crs. Stevenson and McKay, with the foreman, were appointed to interview the Hawera County Council on the subject. Telegraphic advice was received from the State Advances Office that, it was hoped to remit £2OOO on account of the Waimate Riding loan this week.—The chairman and* Crs. Stevenson and Long were appointed to allocate the expenditure of the money. A letter was received from Mr. William Power, of Stratford, acting secretary of the conference of local bodies regarding electric power, enclosing copy of a letter from the secretary of the Taranaki Electric Power District League covering the resolutions passed at the conference held at Eltham on September 23, and asking whether the council wished to be included in the proposed outer area, and, if so, to appoint a delegate to attend a meeting at an early date for the purpose of considering the question of circulating a petition to enable the outer areas to be brought within the area of supply—The council considered the matter in committee, and decided that the letters be “received” pending further information. The secretary of the Counties’ Association wrote asking for the council’s*- support to the resolution passed by the recent conference in opposition to the Main Highways Bill. —The chairman gave a verbal report on his visit to the conference, and his action in supporting the resolution was confirmed.
