RATES ON NATIVE LANDS.
PROVIDING FOR COLLECTION NEW LEGISLATION PROPOSED. > By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. In the House to-day, Mr. V. H. Reed (Bay of Islands) moved the second reauing of the Native Land Amendmeni Bill, which he. said consisted of t-wc clauses, one providing for fences on the boundaries of native lands, and the second providing for the collection ol rates on improved native lands. So far as boundary fences were con cerned, the law at present provided that an owner adjoining Crown lands could erect a fence, aqd as soon as that Crown land was sold he could claim from the buyer half the cos: oi the •fence. The first clause of tne xsiil sought to place native land on the same footing as Crown land, and the second clause gave a local authority power tq distrain upon stock running on improved native land if the rates were unpaid twelve months after a notice that •rates were due had been given.
The Bill was read a second time or the voices and referred to the Native Affairs Committee.
