DANCE RECITAL
LAST NIGHT’S PERFORMANCE. The Empire Theatre was crowded, with spectators of a recital given by pupils of Miss Mamie Ellis last evening, and much anticipation was in the air. Several of the performers showed considerable ability, while others, including some quite little folk, did remarkably well. The sugar plum fairy and pierrot, by Misses H. George and M. Mouatt, showed real combination and was certainly the most effective number of the evening, the two working well together and presenting quite a pleasing picture. Miss E. Moverley showed considerable ability in the number, “Something Oriental.” One of the most delightful of numbers by the little people was Miss Jean Blackley’s “Our Kvwpic.” She really knew her work, and completely lost herself in it, being quite indifferent to the fact of hundreds watching every movement. It would contribute very greatly to the success of the whole production if the delays between the numbers could be cut down to a minimum; this is always a difficult matter, and requires very close attention. MrB. A. B. Macdonald and Mr. A. North gave acceptable assistance with well selected vocal numbers, while Mr. A. O. Sturrock contributed a solo in the second part, besides playing for Miss M. Ellis’ “Chicken Solo.” the music selected being “'The Dancing Doll,” by Poldini. Most of the dunces were played by a small orchestra led by Mr. R. George. The repetition on Thursday should draw another packed house.
