Air. O’Donovan, Police Commissioner, retires early next year, after 42 years’ service in the force. Mr. Alassey announced in the House, that Sir John Salmond has been selected by Cabinet to represent New Zealand at the Disarmament Conference in Waehingtos.—Press Association. The death of Mr. Richard Prouse, a pioneer settler and sawmiller of the Levin district, is announced. Mr. Prouse was 66. —Press Association. The Governor-General, Lord Jellicoe, intends paying a visit to Wanganui from October 25 to 27, and at his request a cricket match is being arranged for October 26, in which he and two members of his staff will participate. Mr. E. J. F. King, field secretary for the Y.M.C.A., is visiting New Plymouth and the Taranaki province on behalf of the National Committee to survey the district with a view to studying the prospects of future work. A Sydney message states that Dr. Todd has been appointed, to the chair of Latin at the University, Sydney, in succession to Professor Butler, retired, Mr. Bernard Museio has been appointed to the chair of Philosophy in succession to Mr. Anderson. A telegram from Dunedin states that the head office of the Union Steamship Co. has received cable advice from Australia of the death of Air. A. B. J. Irvine, late manager of the company’s Auckland branch.
