THE HIDE MARKET.
SUBSTANTIAL RISE LOCALLY. KEEN COMPETITION. There was keen competition at the fourweekly hide sales held by L. A. Nolan and Co., New Plymouth, yesterday. The suggestion expressed last month, that this part of the producers’ business was on the up grade, was confirmed, and prices generally yesterday were distinctly better than those obtained last month. The particularly pleasing feature was the fact that light and medium weight hides were in as keen demand as other lines at prices which compared with sales of three to four months ago are distinctly satisfactory. Calfskins, from 17gd to 182 d for sound, good lines; yearlings made 141 d for lights and 13jd to 12ifd for heavies; cow hides, light brought 6d to 7&d; medium, 6d to 7d; heavy, 7&d. Ox, light, commanded 6£d; medium, 7id to B£d; heavy, lljjd to 14|d; stout (specially good), 15|d. The rises, compared with last month’s figures, equalled lid in respect of cow hides, lid to 2d on. ox medium and light, and Id on heavy.
