MISHAP TO STEAMER.
ACCIDENT TO Al ARA ROA. DRIFTING OFF WELLINGTON. NO CAUSE FOR ALARM. By Telegraph—rress Assoclatlo: Wellington, Last Night. The ferry steamer Mararoa, which sailed at 7.50 p.m. for Lyttelton, deapatched a wireless message at ,8.45 p.m. stating that a breakdown had occurred to her machinery and she was unable to steam. The* tug Terawhiti left at 10.15 to tow the Mararoa back, and arrived, alongside at 11.10. No difficulty is anticipated, as the sea is smooth, with a light wind off the shore and drizzling rain. The tug Pelican ( left at 11.10 to assist in the tow. There were about 130 passengers on board the Alararoa. The vessel was outside the heads when the mishap occurred. It was too deep to anchor. There is no alarm on board, and repairs are expected to' be effected in time for the vessel to sail on Thursday. The Prime Minister also maae a statement in the House as to the absence of danger, and a safe tow into port is assured. fj&ter. At midnight a message from the Alararoa stated: “Endeavoring to effect repairs; will know at 1 a.m. if able to proceed to Lyttelton.” A tug if? standing alongside the Alararoa, which has not drifted noticeably since the mishap.
