MAGISTRATE'S COURT. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Oct. 10. A sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was held to-day, Mr. A. M. Mowlem, S.M., presiding. Judgment was given for plaintiff T>y default of defendant in the. following undefended civil cases: W. J. R. Avery v. John Coleman, £1 3s 7d (costs l'3s) ; ißarigituhua Tamihana v. Samuel Me'Donald, 9s 5s (costs £2 13s); Richard IGribbon v. Horatio Adlam, £1 4s 7d (costs 14s); E. T. E. Button v. A. J. McNeil, £8 3s 7d (costs £1 10s 6d); C. H. Johnston v. Robert Erickson, £4 ]ss (costs £1 5s 6d); Waitara Borough Council v. Kaho Heremia, £4 16s (costs £1 19s). In a judgment summons action Claude Jeffries, at the suit of W. Jury and Co., was ordered to pay x£9 ]os 3d forthwith, in default ten days’ imprisonment in New Plymouth gaol, the warrant to be suspended for 14 days after service of the order. Roimata Kuruwhatia was convicted and ordered to pay costs (17s) for failing to send his child to school. The truant inspector (Mr. G. Pascoe) stated that the child had been absent for five weeks.
In the case of Charles Emery (Mr. C. R. Stead) v. Jas. H. Olsson (Mr. A. A. Bennett), a claim for possession and rent, Mr. Stead said that the plaintiff was satisfied that the defendant was making efforts to obtain another place and he would he prepared to accept an adjournment in these circumstances. Mr. Bennett said that the defendanthad a verbal arrangement with a party to obtain a house which would be vacant in December. However, he was going to ask that the case be struck out on the ground that the summons had not been issued on the special form for tenement cases which the Act prescribed. The magistrate said that in' that vase he would not strike the case out, but treat it as one in which legal service had not yet been made.
Tare Tewai Pomare was fined £2 (costs 4s lid) for an assault, the complainant being Kapinga McClutchie. The case had been adjourned from the previous court day in order that the defendant should find a surety to keep the peace for six months.
CRICKET CLUB REVIVED. Waitara has been without a cricket team for a number of years, but at a meeting held last week to revive the club, a fair number of supporters being in attendance, it was resolved to form a club, called the Waitara Cricket Club, and to join the North Taranaki Association. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: President, Mr. A. W. Ogle; vice-presidents, Messrs. Blair, Dowsett and Dr. Allisons secretary, Mr. J. Purdie; treasurer, Mr. A. Ellis; delegate, Mr. G. N. Skelton. It was decided that subscriptions be: Seniors, 20s; juniors, 10s. Another meeting will be held on Thursday next, when the opening day will be arranged and the selection of club captain will be made. GOVERNOR-GENERAL’S VISIT. As already announced, Lord and Lady Jellicoe are paying this little community a visit late in the afternoon on the 28th instant. There will not be much time at their disposal, but it is suggested that a combined address of the borough and county should be presented on the Camp Reserve. The children will also take an important part. GENERAL NEWS. The Waitara Chamber of Commerce has received a reply from the Minister of Public Works that enquiries are being made regarding the department being in possession of information relating to the WTaitara River as a source of hydro-electric power. He will also see if the officer visiting New Plymouth can include an inspection of the Waitara River. Messrs. Borthwick and Sons, finding it difficult to obtain houses, have gone in for building houses for their permanent steff. Three have been built and occupied for some time, and two more are in course of erection.
