An explorer in Eastern Greenland recently discovered a native girl wearing a dress of silver fox skins worth at present prices nearly 150,000 dollars. A schoolboy enjoying his holidays in. the Lake District, writing home during his first week, said: “Dear mother,—l am having a glorious time. Ham and eggs for breakfast, roast beef for dinner, meat pies for tea, sausages and icecream for supper.” A week later came the pathetic announcement: “Dear mother, —I have been bilious for foua days, but lam going to Morecambe tomorrow.”
Mr. Worsp, of Whangarei, who was lately in England, states that when he left stock were much higher in price than they were in New Zealand, in fact, prices were about three times what they were in this part of the world. For instance, he saw lambs sold at £3 10s per head, two-year-old steers at £2O, milking cows at £5O. On one farm he saw mixed yearling heifers sold at £l4 each These prices, however, have gone back somewhat since last June.
There is a post and telegraph regulation that no communication may be enclosed in a newspaper, packet, or any other form of postal parcel. Suspecting that the regulation was being infringed, instructions were issued to senior officers at all main post offices to open a number of packets and newspapers and search for irregular enclosures. A good number of the newspapers and parcels examined were found to contain taxable enclosures. On every irregular enclosure found a fee amounting to twice the ordinary rate of postage is collected Breaches of the regulation have been found to be general through the Dominion.
