INGLEWOOD.

BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Oct. 7. The Inglewood Beautifying an<l> Improvement Society held a meeting on Wednesday night, but the weather was bad. A farewell social was to be held at the Parish Hall, other similar social functions had been held the night before', and altogether the supply of energy requisite to rouse residents to roll up was attenuated, hence the meetmg was a small one, though sufficient to carry out the work required. There were present: The president (Mr. J. Sutherland), the secretary and treasurer (Mr. W. J. Smith)., and Messrs. F. H. Brown, W. H. Eager, T. Drake, and E. Martyn. The secretary was directed to forward a letter of very hearty thanks to Mr. W. W. Smith for the time he had given, at the request, of’ the secretary, to inspection of the grounds, as well as for his exhaustive report and advice for work be done, such letter to cover a douceur from the society, \Vhich it was trusted he would accept to reimburse the expense he had been put to. Regarding the fencing recommended, it was reported by the president that the Domain Board would cause such fence, as the society suggested, to be nut up without delay when the line of fence had been pointed out, and it was agreed to convene a working bee for Thursday next, 13th inst., and then, on the ground, to make a final decision as to Jence lines.

A hearty vote of thanks to those who gave prizes for competition at the social and dance in the Town Hall on behalf of the society, and to all other? who had in any way lent a helping hand W(is carried on the proposal of Messrs. Eagar and Brown. Mr. W. J. Smith, treasurer, submitted a statement of receipts and disbursements, since the start, which showed a credit balance of £l5 14s.

It is already mooted that a great effort fo increase the funds of the society and enlarge the number of sympatnisers is to be made at an early date, •by holding a monster euchre parky with substantial prizes (some have already been promised) in the Town Hall. Full particulars will be duly advertised, but about the 20th is hinted at, and when it is added that Mr. W. H. Eagar is a moving spirit in the proposal, the public will know they can depend on due performances.

FOOTBALL CLUB’S SOCIAL. The Inglewood football Club’s social and dance on Thursday was a complete success. The euchre competition was warmly patronised, 16 tables being kept in full swing. The results were: Ladies’ prizes, Mrs. A. Kennedy first, Miss Payne second, Mrs. C. Reid consolation; gentlemen’s, Mr. P. McGonagle first, Mr. G. Henwood second, Mr. Farquhar consolation, all of which were donated so as to help the club’s finances, the donors being Messrs. W. Eagar,. F. Julian, and Lealand. The floor for dancing was in excellent order. Mr. P. Chapman was MAJ., and Miss Curd’s orchestra supplied the music, Misses Wilson and Hen wood, and Mr. F. Julian volunteering extras. An excellent supper was provided by Messrs. Lealand Bros. The actual amount by which the club’s funds were augmented is not yet known for certain, birt certain it is ’twas substantial, and the club wishes to express sincere thanks to all, especially lady helpers. for the assistance they so kindly gave. Following are the awards for

merit to active members of the club for 1921F0r best forward, W- Cheyne, •presented by Mr. A. Lile; best trained player, P. O’Carroll, presented by Mr. R. Masters, M.P.; best back, R. Bishell, presented by Mr. A. Thompson; junior player, G. Atkinson, presented by Mr. R. Masters, M.P.; junior forward, S. Wilson, presented by Mr. G. Farquhar. It is worthy of note that football in Inglewood has decidedly made strides forward during 1921, and strong hopes are held that if the same moral and practical support are given to the club next year, a very good record may be put up.
