The town has recently been very quiet,’ and business, even on the recognised busy days, Tuesday and Saturday, has not been brisk. However, the end’ of last, month was bank balance time, and it is thought that, this has had a good deal to do with the quietness of business. A local jeweller remarked that last Saturday had been quite a good day with him, and expressed the opinion that -following the very slow time experienced last month, terminating with the bank balancing, trade should be brighter. The annual show is to be held next month, and this should tend to bring more visitors and business to town-
There has been very little sport here lately. Football competitions finished a few weeks ago, and it has been too early to start the summer sports. Golf finished yesterday, and there will be a period of about three more weeks with practically no sport at all. Tennis has started on one or two courts, but the season will not really start until the beginning of next month, when the bowling season will also commence in earnest. Indications are that tennis will be very popular this summer. The monthly meeting of the Stratford School Committee was held on Wednesday. Present: Mr. J. W. Boon (chairman), Mesdames Phillips and Tichbon, Messrs. E. G. Foster, D. M- Clark, VV. Abraham and W. Pinhey. The roll nunfber for the High School for the same period was 173, and the average attendance 160. The secondary school department had been dis-established on September 30, and they were working as a Technical High School. The inspector’s report on the working of the High School classes was quite satisfactory. The new school would open with a staff of seven permanent teachers, including the headmaster, and four or five itinerant instructors. Mrs. Tichbon and Mr. Sanderson were appointed a visiting committee for this month, and it was decided to find out the cost of providing seats in the shelter shed-
