PREMIERSHIP. Received Oct. 7, 9.20 p.m. Sydney, Oct. 7. Mr. McGirr has announced that he ■will be a candidate for the Premier-'ship.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. SYDNEY’S LABOR MAYOR. Sydney, Oct. 7. When the flags at the Town Hall were hoisted half mast for Mr. Stofey, the Union Jack flew over the Australian flag. The Lord Mayor, Mr. Lambert, ordered the Australian flag to be placed above the Union Jack and now it so flies. The incident has caused much adverse comment. AUSTRALIAN FLEET. Melbourne, Oct. 7. The throe destroyers Tasmania, Tattoo and Success have been paid off in accordance with the scheme of defence retrenchment. It is stated that the fleet has now been reduced beyond the margin of safety. LABOR IN LEAGUE WITH GERMANS. Sydney, Oct. 7. The Labor Council adopted a resolution that an appeal be made to the workers of Germany, urging them to renew their efforts to overthrow the capitalistic system. The Council promises to do the same in Australia. MAY DAY CELEBRATIONS. Sydney, Oct. 7The Labor Council decided to appeal to unions not to participate in the eighthour day celebrations, but to make May Day the universal Labor Day.
