RACING IN AUSTRALIA. VICTORIAN MEETINGS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Oct. 7, 10 p.m. Melbourne, Oct. 7. Scratchings are:—Guineas: Milfoil gelding. Caulfield Cup: Whiz Bang, Peroration, Sail On, Battleaxe, Ecarte, Calid, Finnimbre. Melbourne Cup: Impeyan, Easter Week, Kildennis. C. B. Kellow has purchased a half interest in Lionel Atwell. TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturqa.”) Wellington Handicap should appear to-day. Epitaph paid a short price at Hastings. The Australian J.C. spring meeting concludes to-day. Celmisia appears to be sore since racing at Wanganui.
Bindie’s injuries were only slight when he was galloped on at Otaki.
Desert Gold has foaled a filley to Finland, and visits King John this season.
If the Patronus gelding Ah Fu had won the Tomoana Hurdles, instead of running second, he would have paid nearly a score.
The petition for the retention of the totalizator permit held by the Rangitikei Racing Club has been signed by over two thousand persons. At Hastings on Wednesday, three Absurd’s won and two ran second. They were Epitaph, Ruruw’ai, Caricature, and QrtfteHUe*
Reversing the order of things, Soldiers’ Chorus, who has been doing stud duties for several years, is being tried again as a racehorse.
Chant Royal (King Mark—Chantress) goes very fast for a few furlongs, but after that his rider could get off and race him homo —with one boot off!
‘‘Poor Paddy,” Availed Mrs. Cafeey, ,c he come home drunk from the races, singing ‘I won’t be home till morning.’ The policeman saw him, and now he won’t be home for a month!”
Admiral Codrington was withdrawn from the big race at Hastings on Wednesday, and subsequently backed down to a Gloaming price in the Glengarry Handicap, but Hyginas, who “mixes it” with some success, proved too good at the weights. Four well-known Wanganui sports—- “ Billy” Tuck, “Jack” Foster, “Tom” Nixon, and George Spriggens—pooled in £lOO and presented a fine cup to the Waverley-Waitotara R.C. The trophy will go to the winner of the principal handicap there this month.
Some Absurd notes! A Wanganui scribe states that Mr. Geo. Currie asked 10,000gns. for Thespian (Absurd-Leta), and furthermore, refused £40,000 for Absurd himself! Now, who said that there was such a thing as financial stringency ?
Mr. B. Jolt’s team is a small one, but all the prads can go fast. Still Sea, who had the Trial at Napier won from a furlong up, appears to be a particularly good sort. After finishing fourth at The Park, Uncle Alex beat a high.-class field in the Juvenile at Hastings, those behind him including Bumptious and Viyella. The dividend was a stunner!
When Epitaph ran away from her opponent in the Hastings Stakes, her time (48 2-5 sec.) equalled the record for the race, registered in 1911 by the Hon. J. D. Ormond’s Glade. Epitaph’s brother, Humbug, won the race in 1919. Sydney papers announce victories at the smalls of Hare Hatch (Gloaming's brother) and Winged Victory (a brother to Biplane), but they are many streets removed from the pair that “Dick” Mason has won so much money with.
Mason’s horses—Gloaming, C’upidon, Veil and Coniston —are booked to leave Sydney to-day for home. On the whole they have done well, but Gloaming’s sickness was unfortunate. A meeting between the N.Z. champion and Beau ford would have resulted in a great “go.” A friend -who arrived back from Sydney this week informs me that the tracks at Randwick were like lightning, and fast times were anticipated. All the same, Beauford’s for ten furlongs was an eye-opener, and it is certain that Gloaming would have had to do his best to beat the Beau Soult horse at the present time.
Foo Chow, a fancied New Zealand Cup candidate, pulled up lame after contesting tne Geraldine Cup, and his chances of being produced at Riccarton in good condition are very remote. At the same meeting Orange Mart ran so badly that, she lost whatever friends she had for the big event at the Holy City.
Mermin's full-sister has been named Zareba, and her running at Masterton will he keenly watched. She is said to be a taking filly. Another good sort of a two-year-old in those parts is Uleaborg (Egypt—Finery), who was unlucky at Greenmeadows last week.
“Bobby” Lewis, who rode Furious in the. A.J.C. Derby, was making his 15th appearance in that race. He won on Malster, Hautvillietyi, and Sylvanite; was second on Swedt Nell, Wallace Isinglass and Furious; and third on Free States, Mother Goose and Thrice. Songbird, a colt by Linnet, showed fine form at Ashburton and at Geraldine, and when he hops out in the Dunedin Guineas and measures strides with Palestrina and the elect of the Greenwood and Clifford stables we. should get a line as to his New Zealand Derby prospects.
Toa Taua’s brother. Mountain Lion (Mountain Knight—Fairy Gold) is a speedy customer, but apparently below the standard set by Epitaph and Lady Lois. Epitaph, Mountain Lion, and Uncle Alex remain in the Wellesley Stakes at Trentham, and the Haweratrained colt appears to be the one most likely to stretch Epitaph’s shapely neck. If lidy Lois never wins another race—an unlikely contingency—she will have paid her way, for the Avondale Stakes winner only cost 15gns. as a yearling.
Recent importations from England by the Hon. E. W. Alison were Romeo, a stallion by Flying Fox—Glare, and a brood mare, Katasha, by Beppo, wit h a colt by Ulster King at foot, and in foal to Chancer. The colt has been appropriately named “Belfast.” Jockster JL. Goodwin, who rode Raffle when she scored at Napier, comes from a family that has had racing dealt out to it From the bottle days. His father, the late A. Goodwin, besides being a notable cross-country rider, trained old-
time heroes like Creusot, Blackberry Evening and Morning.
According to a Wanganui writer, Walter Rayner is taking Listowel, Thespian and Yolande to the Wellington meeting. Listowel is engaged in the Champion Plate, and Thespian in the Pearce Handicap. A—
Roy Reed's victorious career was temporarily retarded on Wednesday, when the Hawke's Bay J.C. stewards tacked on to him the blame for Truthful falling in the Spring Handicap. Reed was on Maioha, and he is generally credited with being a clean rider. Although beaten in the Avondale C up, Volo will have as many Taranaki admirers if stepped out with 9.9 in the big race at Waverley. Tame Fox, though a horse of moods, may run well with 8.9, and others that catch the eye are CruceJle 7.13, Detroit 7.6, and Stork hi the Brewer Handicap at Waverley, (nah should be quite capable of running a good race under Ost. Birkie is nicely treated with 8.2, and Awake 7.9 should also help to make things interesting. Simon has eaught it hot with 12st. in the Handicap Hurdles, and punters may prefer the chances of Gold Problem 9.10 and War Loan 9.9. The last named appears to be improving with every gallop. , , The minor events at Waver.ey should all draw good fields. Awake, Lady Polly, Sunny Jim, Mockery, and Demades can all travel fast, and they are in good fettle at present. Lady Faa, the disappointing daughter of King’s Birthday, has changed hands again, and is now in the charge of W. Dwyer at Waverley. She will be a runner at the local meeting. Hallowmas is located at Hawera this season, and his services are in good demand. Of the forty (or so) mares, sent to him last year all are in foal, or have foaled, and the imported horse appears likely to make his mark in Taranaki. Eurythmic won the Caulfield Stakes last year, and his half-head defeat by Tangalooma '(a stablemate) in the recent race would occasion some comment. J c?’ . :ct, this form makes Tangaloomn c-t- ,o bo the tb® Gaul*- 1 * 4 - - f ho
ting market has suggested for a long time. One of the smartest two-year-olds in Christchurch is said to be Farceur, a colt by Absurd —Our Lady, trained by R. J. Mason. Acceptances for the Waverley-Waitotara annual meeting close on Thursday next, at 8 p.m.
