SOCIAL EVENING.

AVENUE ROAD CAPJD CLUB. The euchre party and dance -which was held by the Avenue Road Card Club last night as a wind-up to their season was a very successful function. There was an attendance of over 300 at the Workers Hall, fully taxing the accommodation, and numbers had to be turned away. In the euchre tournament which occupied the first part of the evening, 78 tables were engaged, representing 312 competitors for the generous prizes offered. At an interval in the proceedings the president of the club (Mr. E. J. Sole) presented the prizes to the winners in the tournament, and took the opportunity of extending thanks to the ladies’ committee for their work in connection with the supper arrangements, and to Messrs. Derby and Co. for assistance rendered to the club. On behalf of the New Plymouth Card Association, Mr. E. Whittle presented to Mr. A. Richards, capatin of the Avenue ■Road team, the shield for the best aggregate in the competitions during the season. He mentioned that the shield was first competed for in 1908, and though the club were runners-up on a number of occasions this was the first year they had succeeded in annexing the trophy. He also handed to Mr. Richards the euchre shield, which was presented in 1908 by the late Colonel Malone, and which had been won on four occasions by the Avenue Road Club. Mr. Whittle said this was a shield to be treasured, as it perpetuated the memory of a very gallant soldier. He concluded by complimenting the club on their fine gathering. Club prizes for the best scores during the season were received by Messrs. S. Hawke (euchre) and N. James (crib). The winners in the tournament were: —Ladies: First prize, Miss Blewman; second, Mrs. Mascall; third, Miss F. Oliver. Men’s: First, Mr. Chapman; second, Mr. J. Morris; third, Mr. N. W. Smith. After supper dancing was kept up till a late hour, music being supplied by Messrs. Orr and Guscott. The M.C.’s were Messrs. Hardgreaves and Osborne, and the secretaryship was filled by Mr. J. Cliff. The ladies’ committee, who so successfully catered for the large crowd, proved an energetic band under the presidency of Mrs. Cliff.
