RISE IN HIDE PRICES.

BIG JUMP AT CHRISTCHURCH. NEW LIFE TO THE MARKET. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. A sensational advance in the rates for hides took place in the city yesterday, when several stock firms submitted 3000 hides at auction. The rise was quite up to 75 per cent, and more in instances, and .the sale is claimed to be easily the best held in New Zealand. For over a year the market has been stagnant, and the values ruling were extraordinarily low, but at yesterday’s sale export buyers stepped in, and the whole catalogue was quitted to a brisk demand. Most of the export purchases were for the Melbourne market. The best demand was for hides of 551 b weight and upwards, and the average advance for these ran from 3d to 4d per lb.
