A tragic affair occurred in the Galway Town Hall at a dance in aid of the Republican prisoners’ dependents. A fracas started outside, shots broke the windows, and the dancers threw themselves upon the floor to escape flying bullets, one of which struck and killed Lieut. Souchon, of the 17th Lancers, who was motoring past the hall. Another seriously wounded a constable. The cause of the trouble ?is not certain. One version is that the Crown forces attempted to enter the hall without payment and another is that the Republican police tried to search the Crown forces in the vicinity of the building.
