DEFIANT CLERGYMAN.
REFUSES TO PAY RATES. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.— Copyright. London, Oct. 3. The Rev. Mr. Borrill. declaring he is unable to pay the rate levied by the Islington Borough Council, is defying an order of the court committing him to prison. He has barricaded himself in his house and shift* of detectives watch the house day and night. Friends supply Borrill with food, which is drawn up from the street to the windows in baskets. Received Oct. 4, 5.5 p.m. London, Oct. 3. The Rev. J. B. Borrill, of Islington, against whom a distress warrant for the non-payment of rent was issued nine months ago, still withstands the law officers’ efforts to besiege his residence. The doors and windows are effectually barred on week days, but the police are compelled to temporarily raise the siege on Sundays, and the neighbors then furnish food and supplies.—Aus.-N.Z.
