Mr. R. H. Nolan, who at present resides at Auckland, is in Hawera for a short visit. His friends will be pleased to see him looking so well. Mr. J. E. Wilson, S.M., formerly of New Plymouth, is expected to return to New Zealand from Samoa this month. Mr. Wilson will probably be attached to the magisterial staff at Auckland. The death occurred during the week at the Opunake Hotel of Mr. J. Dender after a brief illness. Deceased, prior to coming to Opunake, was in the Otakeho and. Okaiawa districts. The funeral took pla'ce at the local cemetery, the Rev. Father Prendergast officiating. A Christchurch message reports the death of Mr. Adam S'huan Thompson, aged 78, formerly of Invercargill. He was the father of the Rev. A. T. Thompson and the Rev. L. Thompson, of Solway College, Masterton. An old and respected resident of Alton recently passed away in Wanganui in the person of Mrs. J. Ridge, who, with her husband, carried on the business of general storekeepers at Alton. Mrs. Ridge had been ailing for some time past, and her death was not altogether unexpected. Mrs. F. Sherwood, an old Patea resident, and a recent arrival in Alton, passed away suddenly la-t Thursday, after a painful illness. —Star. Mr. Andrew Fisher, whose period of office as High Commissioner for Australia expired in April, and who has since been enjoying a holiday in Australia, has made arrangements to return to England on the R.M.S. Ormonde, which will sail from , Melbourne on October 22. Mr. Fisher said that he had no plans for the future. Portion of his family was with him in Australia and four of his sons were at school in England. It was possible that he would return to Antralia and live there permanently. Mr. and Mrs. W. O’Callaghan, of Hawera, left England for New Zealand on September 17. and expect to arrive about the first week in November. Tn a letter to a friend in Hawera, Mr. O’Gallaghan mentioned that he had been playing golf on the Sandy Lodge links, which he considers the finest he has ever played on. He met Arthur Lewis, of Wanganui, there and had some games with him. Lewis was playing particularly fine golf, as instanced by the fact that at one hole of 520 yards he was putting for a 3 on both morning and afternoon rounds.
