ROAD v. RAILWAY.

While in railway circles it is. pop ted out that any reduction in the freight rates now under discussion is likely to afect only that class of commodity least carried by motor transport companies, an/» therefore, cannot be regarded as a challenge to road companies, it is not denied that a fight with road transport is bound }o come, sooner or later. The railways estimate that last year 6,000,000 tons wefc transferred from the railways to the roads, and the railways propose to recover this. The main fight probably belin Parliament, when the railway compppes seek to regularise the position regarcing their own use of road transport. » A message received in July stfed that the railway companies made an wsuccessful effort to insert a clause in the Railway Bill permitting companies to rin road services. The Speaker ruled that the . clause was not permissible*
