WAITARA.
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Oct. 3. A large and representative meeting of business people was held in Mr. H. E. Vaughan’s office on Thursday last for the purpose of reviving the Chamber of Commerce, which existed before the war. Mr. Vaughan, who was asked to take the lead at an informal meeting, was voted to the chair. Mr. Vaughan said he was not looking to take the head of the movement, but recognising that such a body was a necessity to watch over the interests and needs of the town and district, Tie was willing to hold the position for twelve months. He, however, expected al! those who were interested would not forget to attend the meetings, and he i hoped by united action some, good work 1 would be accomplished. The election of officers resulted: President, Mr. H. E. Vaughan; vice-presi-dent, Mr. P. J. Allen; secretary and treasurer. Mr. H. Southwell; committee, Messrs. Gaw, Stead, Johns, Wells and Nosworthy, with the officers ex-officio. It was resolved that the committee meet when required, but a general meeting of members will be held regularly on the first Tuesday in each month. The subscription was fixed at 5s per annum. In response to an inquiry as to what matters needed attention, Mr. O. Frank pointed out the necessity of the Moki Road being formed. Settlers at present had to travel to Stratford, a distance of 58 miles, against Waitara 28 miles. —lt was resolved to write to the Clifton County Council urging that a grant should be sought from the Government for ths formation of this road. Mr. Jaggs referred to the want of shipping facilities, and hoped the Chamber’s influence would be brought to bear for a vessel to visit Waitara from main ports periodically. Mr. Stead brought up the question of hydro-electric development, and pointed out the possibility of inducing the firm of Summerson and Sons to look to the Waitara River as a source of power for the treatment of ironsand.
GENERAL ITEMS. The local State school will hold its annual examination on Monday and Tuesday, October 17 and 18. I The Waitara Bowling Club open their green for the season on Saturday next, October 8, when the usual president p,nd vice-president match will take place. Mr. Chas. Barnitt, of Uruti, is suffering from a fractured bone in his leg, the result of an accident, and is receiving attention at the New Plymouth Hospital. The marriage of Mr. Frederic Arthur Ross,' the well-known footballer, and Miss Aileen Mary, youngest daughter oi Mr. and Mrs. ’ Walter F. Jenkins, took place at St. Barnaba’s Church, Mt. Eden, Auckland, on the 19th inst. An officer of the Internal Affairs Department visited Waitara on Tuesday last, in connection with a request from the R.S.A. for a grant towards the upkeep of the soldiers’ cemetery, which is located near the school. This cemetery was an eyesore for a number of '.ears, being neglected and overgrown with fern until a few months ago, when the returned soldiers, in conjunction with the Legion of Frontiersmen, set to work and made it as it should be, and they deserve a lot of credit for their labor. The Government official was conducted to the spot by the Rev. .Jr. I Gavin and Messrs. H. E. Brabant and J. W. Laing. He made some recommendations in regard to turfing the graves and other alterations to the ground. He promised that he would represent the matter of a grant to Ins department, and he believed an annual grant would be made. He also visited the public cemetery to report on the soldiers’ graves there.
