SUGAR CHEAPER.

REDUCTION OF £l3 A TON. NEW CONTRACT MADE. Sugar will be cheaper next month. It is understood that the Government has entered into a new contract with the Colonial Sugar Company and as a result a reduction of £l3 par ton will be »«da as from November 1. The present priceof sugar at the works in Auckland ia £47 per ton and the naw price in £34. It seems doubtful whether the publid will receive the full benefit of thia marked reduction, as it is rumored the Government will take part of it in the form of a new duty. The new price would mean a reduction in the retail price of about l%d per pound, but it is expected Jd will go in duty, so that the actual fall in the price of sugar on November 1 will be barely ijd. No official statement has yet been made by the Government either as to a new contract or the price, but <in announcement on these lines may be expected shortly.
