ORGANISING TEACHERS.

PROTEST BY SCHOOL COMMITTEES' ASSOCIATION. A meeting of the executive of the Taranaki School Committees’ Association was held last night in the Technical College, New Plymouth. In the absence of the president (Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P.) Mr. J. Garcia was voted to the chair. A number of apologies were received, all expressing their hearty approval of any action taken in protesting against the proposed reduction in the number of organising teachers, which was the principal object for which the meeting was called.

The action of the provincial secretary in forwarding a resolution of protest to the Minister of Education was approved. On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr. Downes (Bell Block), it was unanimously resolved “to thank the Minister of Education for his prompt and courteous reply to the telegram from the provincial secretary of the Taranaki School Committees’ Association protesting against the proposed reduction in the number of organising teachers in Taranaki. The executive also noted with pleasure that as the result of representations by the Taranaki Education Board and Messrs. Masters and Smith, M.P.’s, the Minister hod stated that he would reconsider the matter before coming to a final decision, and the executive expressed the hope that as the result of this reconsideration no reduction would be made, as it was recognised that the work now being done in the backblocks districts by these organusing teachers was a very valuable one, and owing to the scattered nature of the country and the lack of adequate roading facilities, it would be impossible for the work, wh’ioh had already produced such good results, to be satisfactorily carried out if the number were reduced. The lack of reasonable educational facilities had in the past deterred many people from settling in the foackblocks, and the raising] of the standard of education there and the appointment of organising teachers had dona much to overcome that,’* ' I
