SUGGESTED SOLUTION. BASIS OF FINANCIAL RELIEF. By Telegraph,—Press Assn.—Copyrlgtt. London, Sept. 29. The Lord Mayors of the provincial cities met in London and discussed unemployment. They decided to interview Sir Alfred Mond and make the following proposals:— (1) Instead of State assistance to local authorities the Government be urged to adopt grants equal to 75 per cent, of the interest and sinking fund in respect of all approved loans raised by local authorities, the latter having discretion with respect to the rate of wages. (2) The Government be urged to make a State contribution towards the expenditure of boards of guardians where unemployment largely exceeds the normal, thus relieving the existing unfair charge on local rates. The following resolution was carried: “The conference welcomes the Government’s proposal to deal with relief schemes with the utmost despatch, and efforts towards the restoration of national trade.”—Aus.-N.Z.
