“WILL GET THROUGH”
MR. MASSEY’S FAITH IN NEW ZEALAND. INDUSTRY' AND RESOURCE REQUIRED. Auckland, Sept. 30. ‘Much has been done, but much remains to be done to bring this country back to its "pre-war prosperity,” said Mr. Massey at the civic reception to him today. “The country was going to get through, but to get through at the earliest date it would be necessary for every section to apply all the industry, resource, and power of economy it possessed, privately as well as publicly. After looking at other countries he said that no country which had taken part in the war had come through so well as New Zealand. They had got through the first winter of the post-war depression, and he hoped that the country would be able to turn the corner before next winter, to which all the European countries were looking with dread. There were no better judges of the prospects than financial people in London, and he could tell them that New Zealand’s credit now was higher than that of any other country except Britain, and it was but little lower than that of Britain itself. (Applause.) If it were necessary to ask for more money, he was satisfied that it could be got within the British Empire, although he had reliable information that financiers in Wall Street, New York, would be glad to lend New Zealand any money required at current rates. He did not think it would be necessary to go outside the Empire for financial assistance. “Speaking figuratively,” he added, “I have brought half a million in pocket. I shall explain that later.”
