FAMOUS SINGER.
RELEASE FROM RUSSIA. WIFE HELD AS HOSTAGE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Oct. 2, 5.5 p.m. London, Oct. 1. Chaliapin, the famous Russian bass, has arrived in London on a concert tour. Thereafter he gives twenty concerts in America, and the proceeds will be for the Russian famine fund. He described London as a heaven after seven years in Russia. Chaliapin is on leave from the Soviet until December, and his wife and family are held in Russia as hostage for his safe return. • He told an interviewer that the Russian famine conditions were worse than England imagines. He would not discuss Bolshevism. It is recalled that he sang with Caruso in Milan in 1900. Laurie Kennedy, a ’cellist, of Sydney, supports Chaliapin. It is a great distinction, as Chaliapin is the world’s greatest singer.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
