i RACING IN AUSTRALIA. X A.J.C. SPRING MEETING. ■ CUPIDON WINS THE DERBY. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Oct. 2, 5.5 p.m. Sydney, Oct. 2. The weather was fine, the course excel- ■ lent and the attendance upwards of 80,000 for the first day of the Australian Jockey Club’s spring meeting yesterday. The victories of Beauford and David were most popular, both shaping in convincing fashion. The former had a bit in hand, whilst David timed his finishing dash to a nicety. The New Zealander Cupidon’s win in the Derby surprised many, owing to recent indifferent performances. The victory was a triumph for G. Young’s horsemanship and Cupidon’s undoubted grit. Mr. R. J. Mason stated that he is taking Cupidon to Melbourne for the Cups. He withdrew him from the Victorian Derby as he was afraid he would be unable to carry 8.10. Loyal Irish was a bad last all the way in the Derby, and was a big disappointment to his supporters. The day’s racing was pleasant to patrons, though devoid of real excitement. Rain fell ten minutes after the conclusion of the programme. Details of the racing are: HURDLES; two miles.—Reducine, 9.12, 1; St. Kitts, 9.10, 2; Queen’s Guard, 9.0, 3. Fourteen starters. Publicity led to the distance, and then followed a grand neck-and-neek struggle between Prince j Sandy and Malurys, the former gaining a narrow verdict, a head separating second and third. Time, 2min 6=)sec.

RACING COMMISSION. NAPIER PARK’S PROTEST. Napier, Last Night. Sir George Clifford, president of the Racing Conference, in a letter to the president of the Napier Park Club, intimates that it is his intention to submit to Premier his opinion regarding the Racing Commission's report, with which Sir George Clifford is wholly in accord in its main features, and considers any minor points on which hesitation is possible too trivial to bo allowed to sacrifice the report’s substantial advantages. .* Sir George Clifford requests that in j order to add force to the representations, the Park Club should communicate its accord or disapproval of his opinion. The president, of the Park Club replied: “I regret, on account of the injustice to Napier Park and several other matters, I cannot agree with your opinion as to the Commission’s report. The 1 recommendation to abolish the Napier 'Park Club, while continuing permits for small districts, practically surrounded by the course, has aroused indignation iii the whole of this district.” / - V TROTTING. An amusing story is going the rounds of London concerning an incident which is said to have happened at a recent race meeting. An individual in a state of great agitation rushed into the ring after a race, shouting, “Hats off! Hats off!” Almost unconsciously the order was obeyed in several cases, and somebody then asked “Why? Is some Royal personage coming along?” “No,” replied the excited one: “I’ve been welched by a blighted bald-headed bookmaker, and I’m trying to* find him.”
