Or dera for papers may also be left with them. POSTMASTER RETIRING. Sept. 29. After nearly 44 years’ service in the Post and Telegraph Department Mr. G. W. Woods, postmaster at Stratford, will retire to-morrow on superannuation. Although he has only been at. Stratford since February of this year, Mr. Woods has earned the respect and esteem of all with whom he has come in contact here, and the many friends he has made in Taranaki will wish him a pleasant retirement after many years of faithful service. Mr. Woods joined the department, in January, 1877, at Cambridge, and has had a varied career. He was attached to the Wellington, Blenheim, Wakapuaka and Auckland offices success»ively as telegraph operator, and later was | relieving officer for the Auckland district. He was then appointed Auckland representative of the Pacific Cable Board, and in 1910 was appointed postmaster of Paeroa, later being postmaster at Taumarunui and Pahiatua. He came to Stratford on February 15, and by December of this year would have completed 44 years’ service, a record of which he might well be proud. The position here will be filled by Mr. W. T. Johnston, inspector, until a permanent appointment is made.

EGMONT CLUB SOCIAL. The Egmont Club held a very enjoyable social last evening. In the early part of the evening a concert programme was rendered, items being given by the club orchestra (selections), Miss Rona Kino, Messrs. H. Ackroyd, P. Coe, A. D. Bills (songs), and Mr. H. Lester (clarinet selections). After supper had been served proceedings concluded with a dance in the Parish Hall, music being provided by Fox’s Orchestra. GENERAL. The total receipts from the concert recently held by the Taranaki Provincial Scottish Society in aid of the Stratford Fallen Soldiers’ Memorial Fund amount to £l5B Ils 4d. The expenditure amounted to £75 18s lid, leaving a balance of £B2 12s 5d to go into the fund. Mr. W. T. Johnson, inspector for the Post and Telegraph Department, is expected to arrive in Stratford to-night to take the position of postmaster in place of Mr. G. W. Woods until a permanent appointment is made.

North Auckland buyers were in each case the purchasers. Mr. T. I. Lamason advertises his usual weekly sale, commencing in his auction room, Broadway, at 1 p.m. on Saturday. ■ A big variety of articles will be offered, and farmers might find in a visit to the auction room a chance to purchase some needed implement at a very reasonable cost. The large number of satisfied users , of the Corona Portable Typewriter is the best advertisement the machine could have. It is ideal for secre- , taries, ministers and all business men.
