THE RAILWAYS.
PROFIT SUCCEEDED BY DEFICIT. EXPENDITURE OVERTAKES REVENUE. The Railway Working Account, showing the revenue and expenditure for the period from April 1. to August 20, appears in the current issue of the Gazette. The revenue for the period totalled £2,’5'62,553, as compared with £2,423,038 in the corresponding period of last year, an increase of £139,515, equal to about 5.| per cent. The expenditure totalled £2,609,883, as against £2.031,597, an increase of £578.236, equal to about 28 per cent. The following shows the position: £ Revenue ......w 2,5’62,553 Expenditure 2,609,883 Showing a loss of .. £47,330 For the same period last year the position was as under:— £ Revenue .... 2,423,038 Expenditure 2,031,597 Showing a profit of £391,441 Thus a profit of £391,441 last year is this year turned into a deficit of £47,330.
