STAR FOOTBALL CLUB.
SUCCESSFUL ANNUAL BALL. The Star Football Club's annual ball, which has beeri a prominent social event in the club’s life, was held last night in the East End pavilion. The weather was beautifully fine, and there was an attendance of ovtjr 200, who all thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Complete arrangements had been made by the energetic committee, of which Mr. W. Hughes was chairman and Mr. J. Clarke secretary. The pavilion was beautifully decorated with flags and greenery by the committee, while at tjie end in a prominent position were displayed the senior, second and third grade banners, chronicling the deeds of the club in the early nineties. Excellent music was provided by Mrs. George’s orchestra, whilst extras were played by Messrs. Knight, Petch, P. A. Tunbridge, J. Hoskin, I. Orr and R- Singh. Messrs. W. Hughes, T. Hurley, P. Sims and W. Deane were M.C.’s and kept matters merrily moving. Supper was served in the supper room, which had been tastefully decorated by the ladies of the committee, who were most assiduous in*' looking after the welfare of their guests. Prior to the supper and dance, Mr. S. J. Smith (president of the club) welcomed all present and thanked them for their patronage. He then presented Mr. Paul Sims, captain of the junior team, with the Carbine Shield, remarking that this shield had been presented ; by Mrs. O'Brien for competition between 1 the Star and Tukapa Chibs. Since its inception the shield had been won by Star nine times and Tukapa seven times. Star won it the last three years, and he hoped they would continue to win it. He incidentally mentioned that though the shield had been presented for competition between Star and Tukapa there was now another club in New Plymouth, and it was possible that arrangements might be made whereby they could also ' compete. He then presented the gold medal, donated by Mr. J. Hoekin to the most improved senior player, to Mr. O. S. Dunford, and the gold medal presented by Mr. W. Hughes to the most improved fourth grade player to Mr. H. Hoffmann. He paid a tribute to all who had assisted at the ball, particularly the committee, and gave a special word of praise to the secretary, Mr. J. Clarke. Dancing was then continued and kept up till ,the early hours.
