TAXES ON FARMERS.
PLEA FOR POSTPONEMENT. FINANCE DIFFICULTIES. ( By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. At a meeting of the North (Canterbury executive of the Farmers’ Union it was decided that in view of the fact that a large number of farmers made no profit during the year and were unable to pay their land tax, to ask the Government to take into consideration the postponement of payments to a future date, with interest in the meantime at the current rates.
It was suggested that the Government should issue Treasury bonds for the amount involved, and should make the issue legal tender. It was also resolved: “That in view' of the financial difficulties ahead, the executive suggests that the Legislature should take into consideration: (a) The increasing of Customs duties of goods in the nature of luxuries; (b) an increase in the tax on amusements and the tax on the totalisator; (c) an amendment of the Monopoly Prevention Act.”
