ENTERTAINMENTS.
EMPIRE THEATRE. CARTER AND DE LYALL’S ENTERTAINERS. Something altogether different from the ordinary class of entertainment was provided by the Carter and De Lyall troupe of artists at the Empire Theatre, New Plymouth, last night. The “star” performer was Levante, who fully lived up to his reputation as a master of modern mystery, and he combined skill with versatility. He produced flags and eggs to further orders, linked rings, and, though tied up secure 1 y by members of the audience, escaped from a straight jacket in exactly forty seconds. The escape from the trunk was also a wonderful feat. Levante also was the chief figure in a spiritualistic seance, into which the typical “spook” atmosphere was imparted by means of bells ringing, tambourines playing, and chairs falling over, apparently of their own accord, whilst the green austral lights, floating faces, and ghastly hands completed the illusion. Geo. Stanley showed himself to be a sharp-shooter of no mean order, hitting a spot on the target from all sorts of angles. Sam Stanley sang several pleasing songs, of which “Drinking” and “Deep Down in My Heart” were the most effective. The characterisation of the North countryman in the song ■’Sarah,” greatly amused the audience. Miss Bette Jones, a young singer, who appears on tour for the first time, possesses a fine contralto voice. Her best songs were, “Angus McDonald,” “Because,” and “I Passed Bv Your Window.” Miss Evelyn Marsh gave two dances, one an interpretation of the classical “Dying Swan,” and the other the modern craze, “Oh! By Jingo/’ and though they were both intricate and each required totally different treatment, she came through the ordeal with credit.
These entertainers appear finally at the Empire Theatre to-night. .
