ORGANISING TEACHERS.
QUESTION IN THE HOUSE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Wellington, Sept. 23. A report that the number of organising teachers in the employ of the Education Department was being decreased was mentioned in the House of Representatives by Mr. S. G. Smith (Taranaki). The member asked that in view of the advantages that had been conferred upon backblock children by the appointment- of these teachers, the House should be given an opportunity of discussing the matter before the number was reduced. He regarded, this as a matter of vital importance to the backblocks children. If the matter could be held over, time would be given for the backblocks parents to realise the hardship that would be inflicted upon them if the proposal was carried into effect. The Minister for Education said that he could not state just what was the position until he examined the papers, find consulted the Director of Educa--1 tion. The question should go on the I order-paper. To say that there was a proposal to reduce the number of organising teachers and that it would cause hardship to backblocks settlers was not stating the position correctly.
