THE TRAMWAYS.

LAST WEEK’S RETURNS.

The returns from the New Plymouth tramways for the week ended last night show an increase in revenue 5 over the corresponding week of last year of £22 3s 8d and in the number of passengers carried of 1607. Following are the details for last week:—

is an absence of understanding of the Union, and of the power of the individual States it contains.

In the U.S.A, there was an idea that New Zealand was progressive in her legislation, and that in many respects the example might well be copied hy America. While touching only generally on this phase, Professor Abel contends that New Zealand might imitate the United States in at least one instance, namely, the matter of railway facilities. She thinks there is room for ft great deal of improvement in the service. Railways had been a tremendous force in American settlement. Originally the construction was done with Government help, but later by private enterprise, and settlement followed the railway quickly. So far Professor Abel’s visit has covered Auckland, Rotorua, and Tauranga. In conjunction with investigation, she is enquiring into phases of the Europeans contact with the Maoris. Having made ft special study of the North American Indian, she is desirous of finding out something about the Maori. Her tour so far has been very helpful from the acquisition of many facts from local detail. About another month will he spent in New Zealand, and the professor then proceeds to Australia, as she ha« given an undertaking to lecture at the Melbourne University in November. To-night Professor Abel will give,ft lecture on “British Nationalism,” at tne Victoria League rooms, commencing at 7.45. I
