TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) Concluding day at Wanganui. The Avondale spring meeting opens to-day. Celmisia returned her party a nice price on Thursday. Admiral Codrington should run well in the Avondale Cup. Tinihanga and Tigerland were hot orders that went cold on Thursday. Despite the steadier of 8.12 Rational should be fancied in the Flying at Avondale.
Mustard Pot just failed to see the distance on Thursday, but will be a tough proposition over a shorter course.
If Humbug’s sister, Epitaph, fails to win the Avondale Stakes, breeding and good looks will count for nothing.
With an unfashionable jockey on top Rouen has raced indifferently of late, but in A. Reed’s bands on Thursday he won very comfortably.
When only half ready, Amythas went under to Trespass in the Eclipse Stakes last year, but the Demosthenes gelding will strip much fitter to-day. Celmisia was Mr. J. B. Gaisford’s sole representative at Wanganui on Thursday, and she duly won. The Bulls sportsman -will be represented by Mattock and Projector to-day, and both are very fit. Racing clubs are making it hot for admission to their meetings. Fancy 10s for a Hunt Club gathering, and 12s 6d at Wanganui! , Contrast these charges with those of the much-abused Avondale J.C., viz., outside Is, inside ss. Weather conditions early on Thursday looked anything but promising for the Wanganui meeting, but the club’s luck was in, for the clouds gave way to a blue sky and warm sunshine before noon, and the lawns and tracks were in splendid order. Unfortunately for the club the unpropitious early morning outlook deterred many country people from attending the meeting, and a moderate crowd invested a moderate amount of cash, the tote investments “slumping” over 25 per cent. The features of the day’s racing were the fine performances put up by Tamatete, who won the Guineas in splendid style; Amythas, who made light of 10.3 in the Flying Handicap: and Rouen, who won the Spring Handicap under 9.7. Mr. R. A. McKenzie was the only double winner, Mireusonta (Absurd — Rosie Desmond) winning the Maiden, and Cleasanta (AU Black—-Westella) making the opposition look poor in the Putiki Hack Handicap. First favorites to win were Mireusonta, Tamatete, Ruddy, Cleasanta, and Amythas, while Tinihanga and Tigerlanad returned small second dividends.
Awake’s withdrawal from the Dune Hack Handicap occasioned some surprise, and Tinihanga was backed as <f the other ten runners were not in it. Celmisia had a fair following, with Believe, Mort Avis and Mixture best backed of the outsiders. From a fair send-off Martian Miss, Tinihanga, and Celmisia were the quickest to find their feet, while Take Take and Kuia dwelt. Tinihanga appeared t.» get knocked back, and Mixture and Celmisia ran to the head of a strung out field. Mixture was done with at the bend, and though challenged by Tinihanga, Celmisia ran on strongly and scored by a length from the favorite, who was well clear of Velociform Kuia and Bonibrook finished next, with Believe and Vindictive in the rear. A dozen lined up for the Maiden, Mireusonta being an odds-on order, with Scotch Mixture, Still' |Sea and Warpath backed in that order. The publics placing proved correctj for this quartette was always prominent; Mireusonta.
leading all the way and winning easily by a length from Scotch Mixture. Still Sea was a poor third, just in front of Warpath, with the rest down the straight. Roukeji Glen and Princess Fran were left at the post. The five carded were saddled up for the Guineas, and Tamatete was made an odds-on favorite, the others being backed in the following order:—The Hawk, Tolerance, Quest and Thespian. After a lot of messing around at the peg The Hawk got the best of the start, and led Tamatete, Thespian, Tolerance and Quest out of the straight. Tamatete joined the leader as t .-. y ran to the back of the course, and half a mile from home had The Hawk beaten. Tamatete led into the straight from Thespian, The Hawk and Tolerance, and won very easily, the four horses finishing in the, above order. The winner’s form was most impressive, ana Thespian also shaped fairly well, but The Hawk, who still looks a bit above himself, cut up badly. TV. a others were outclassed.
The bracketed pair, Omahu and Ruddy, were a trifle better supported than Explorer for the Okehu Hurdles, and Hyginas, Tigritiya and Simon were also considered to have a chance. Ruddy quickly set a warm pace, and Explorer, who tried to go with him, cracked up after a mile had been traversed. Hyginas and Maniahera were then the Marton horse’s closest attendants, but the weight told on the former, and Maniahera was left the forlorn task of chasing Ruddy home. Simon ran well up into third place, with Hyginas and Omahu next, and Mangawai last. Maniahera paid a great dividend for second.
All started in the Hack Steeples, Tigerland and Zola being chiefly fancied, with Tatton Park, Tirau and Master Oriflamme next. Tatton Park led Tirau for a mile and three-quarters, and then gave way to Tirau and Tigerland. Tirau was never afterwards troubled, and won by a good margin, Tigerland also being well clear of Tatton Park. Loyal Arch and Master Oriflamme were distanced, and Zola was pulled up, bleeding. Tame Fox' was best backed in the Spring Handicap, but there was also big money for Mustard Pot. Listowel, Rouen and Trespass. Listowel was in front of Tame Fox, Crucelle and Mustard Pot as they ran past the stand, and the favorite led along the back. Three furlongs from home Active was in front, with Kareao, Tame Fox, Mustard Pot and Rouen next. Rouen came fast entering the straight, and won nicely from Mustard Pot, who finished fast, with Active, Tame Fox and Kareao all bandy. Cleasanta was hot stuff in the Putiki Hack Handicap, for which there were nine starters. Malingerer, the Reaver. Penitent, Halcyon, and Ben Bolt were next best in public estimation. Penitent led a bunched crowd out of the straight, but along the back Cleasanta rushed to the head of affairs, and led from Ben Bolt, The Reaver, and Halcyon. Nothing had a chance with Cleasanta, who scored easily from Ben Bolt, who just beat Halcyon. Left and Generous finished next.
Simonides was withdrawn from the Flying Handicap, leaving ten starters. Amythas was an odds-on favorite, with Missgold, the bracketed pair Solfanello and Blackmail, and Rude next. Blackmail was quickest away, followed by Missgold, Amythas and Armorel. Blackmail and Armorel led into the straight, but Amythas quickly silenced them, and came on to win easily from Blackmail, who was just in front of Amber Tips, with Armorel and Missgold next. Egmont Park got badly away. On recent form Amythas, Mattock, Mustard Pot, Projector, Amber Tips, Blackmail and Tinihanga should be worth watching in early engagements. The meeting between Amythas and Tamatete in the Eclipse Stakes to-day should be worth going a long -way to witness, but the older horse should prevail.
